  5. Fame shortstop; in Cumming, Ga. Known as "Old Aches and Pains"
  6. for complaining to teammates about his ailments, Appling
  7. compiled a .310 lifetime batting average and 2,749 hits in his
  8. 20 seasons with the Chicago White Sox. In 1982, at 75, he
  9. delighted the crowd at an Old Timers game in Washington by
  10. slamming a home run off Warren Spahn.
